at the end of a snowman

I thought
it was a marble mermaid,
or maybe a miniature Venus, rising
from the tufted lawn of my neighbor's house.
It twisted upward fish-like --
tricked
my eye into
constructing some spacious elegance
like a museum hallway or high pedestal
stretching aloft
to house it...
but no, each footfall
still thudded
on flat pavement,
and musty spring still pried at the dirt
and autumn's leaves
still pressed like palms
in the wintered mud beside me.

But that silhouette and its curves --
not its curves, its litheness --
or some kind of pure fluidity
that had trapped my glance
and tugged my attention
from the periphery of
thought
lingered.
Such a beautiful shape,
such a gentle curve--
what a beautiful artifact
whittled down by rain
from a snowman's
three round bellies.
