played like puppets in her palm,
alternately spelling,
urgently,
and pouring water over the
listener's skin.
W-a-...
Splashing like silk.
W-a-t-e-r...
Bright, surrounding sensation.
Like a divining rod,
the young girl's brain
jumped at the discovery
of water -- word, meaning,
cupped in the palm of a hand.
How many of us
are also deaf, dumb,
blind,
palms outstretched
to find meaning.
How many of us
joyfully raise our faces
when we find
-- catch--
-- keep --
-- divine --
sight.
Momentary,
satiating
joy,
that life within us
has language.

"Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten, a thrill of returning thought, and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me." -- Helen Keller

"Pouring water over the listener's skin...splashing like silk." that is such a fresh, refreshing and beautiful simile!
